Epiphany
Has an event in your life left you in awe and sudden waves of overwhelming emotions? If not, then this movie probably will. A 'Silent voice’; written by ‘Reiko Yoshida’ and directed by ‘Naoko Yamada’, left me capricious as I didn’t knew I had such emotions buried inside me. This movie scratch opened the seal of my deepest memories.
The experience was like a rollercoaster ride. Things became pernicious to the point that I was picking my hair out then later felt hopeful rather uplifted but then again, hit with an unexpected loop-the-loop and this vicious cycle keeps on repeating. This seems toxic but is rather very thrilling and eye-opening. This movie clears the mirage about bullying by showing how impactful and deteriorating it is plus does a great job upon showing that sometimes we just have to face the world and have fate in yourselves. The plot changes from bullying to redemption to self-hatred to self-realization. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t sobbing and weeping by the end of the movie as the narration, direction, plot and characters brought this movie to life which made everything 1000% more distressing and devasting but mind-altering and unforgettable.
The main reason people were emotionally attached by this film was that it touches a variety of topics people face in their lifetime like bullying, neglection, self-hatred and furthermore. Each character had their own struggles, growth and story such as the main leads ‘Shouya’ becoming an outcast after he bullied ‘Shouko’ who was a new student that couldn’t hear or speak properly.
The end was a masterpiece. Shouya recovers from a devasting injury and comes back to school during the school fair. He is greeted by all his friends who prepared gifts and prayed for his good health. He is first scared to face them and look them in the eyes because of all the things that happened in the past. He slowly looks up. Uncovers his ears. Opens his eyes. To his revelation, he finds himself, after all this time, to have been surrounded by the people who don’t hate or judge him, rather deeply love and cares for him. This bring not only him to tears but me and most probably everyone who watched the movie.
This movie is filled with such scene and directory that it’s almost impossible to not cry while thinking about it.
